Non-Toxic (Safe) Wood

Below is a list we have compiled from many resources on the net and books. Please exercise caution with branches and leaves for your birds. Please do not collect wood from trees by a road, as the run off is toxic. Trees must be untreated with chemicals or fertilizers. If you don't know if the tree has not been treated, do not use wood from the tree.

Spray branches with vinegar and allow them to soak for at least 5 minutes, then rinse well. To make sure that there are no bugs in the wood, if the branch will fit put it in your oven for approximately 30 minutes at 275F. If it is too large for your oven, then place it in direct sunlight for 2 days.

Common wood that is very dangerous because it will cause cyanide poisining when ingested are apricot, cherry, peach, prune, plum, or nectarine tree wood. Do not use these types of wood for perches, toys, cages, or anywhere that your bird can come into contact with it.
